You Don’t Have to Have a Doula in the Delivery Room to Benefit From One
When many people hear the word doula, they immediately picture someone standing next to the bed during labor, helping during contractions and staying through the birth.
And while some families absolutely want that type of support, others feel unsure about it.
Many parents tell me the same thing:
“I like the idea of a doula, but I’m not sure I want another person in the room when I’m pushing.”
That feeling is incredibly common — and completely valid.
Birth is an intimate experience. Some families prefer a quiet environment with just their partner and medical team present. Others want as few people in the room as possible. There is no right or wrong choice when it comes to what helps you feel safe and comfortable during birth.
What many families don’t realize is that doula support doesn’t have to include attending the birth at all.
In fact, some of the most valuable support a doula can provide happens before and after the baby arrives.
The Value of Prenatal Education
One of the most important parts of doula care is helping families feel prepared before labor even begins.
During prenatal visits, we often focus on things like:
• Understanding what happens during labor and birth
• Learning comfort techniques and labor positions
• Talking through common hospital procedures and interventions
• Preparing partners to support labor in meaningful ways
• Creating a plan for the early postpartum period
Many parents say that the biggest benefit of these visits is simply having the time and space to ask questions.
Medical appointments are often short. Providers may not have time to walk through everything parents are wondering about.
Prenatal education with a doula allows families to slow down, talk through their concerns, and approach birth feeling more informed and confident.
For families who prefer not to have a doula present at the birth itself, these prenatal sessions can still provide tremendous support.
Postpartum Support Is Often What Families Need Most
Ironically, many parents feel well supported during labor but much less supported once they return home with their baby.
After leaving the hospital, families are suddenly responsible for navigating:
• Newborn feeding
• Sleep changes
• Physical recovery after birth
• Emotional adjustment to parenthood
• Learning how to care for a newborn
This is where postpartum doula visits can make a huge difference.
Postpartum support may include:
• Breastfeeding and feeding guidance
• Help understanding newborn behavior and sleep
• Checking in on maternal recovery and emotional wellbeing
• Helping partners learn how to support the mother and baby
• Answering the countless questions that arise in the first weeks
For many families, these visits provide reassurance and guidance during one of the biggest transitions of their lives.
Doula Support Through Medi-Cal and Partnership HealthPlan
Another important thing many families don’t realize is that California Medi-Cal now covers doula services.
For families with Partnership HealthPlan or Medi-Cal, this may include:
• An initial prenatal visit
• Additional prenatal or postpartum visits
• Extended postpartum visits focused on recovery and newborn care
• Continuous support during labor (if desired)
Families can choose how they want to use this support. Some request full birth support, while others prefer to focus on prenatal education and postpartum visits.
Both options are valid, and both can provide meaningful benefits for families preparing to welcome a baby.

Every Family Deserves Support
