Navigating Medi-Cal for Birth & Postpartum Doula Services in Butte, Humboldt, & Surrounding Counties

Accessing doula services through Medi-Cal can make a significant difference for families seeking extra support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. It became an added benefit in 2023. If you live in Butte, Humboldt, or surrounding counties, you may be eligible to receive doula care through Medi-Cal and the Partnership HealthPlan of California. This guide will help you understand how to apply, what to expect, and how to maximize your coverage.

Who Qualifies for Doula Services Under Medi-Cal?

Medi-Cal now covers birth and postpartum doula services for eligible individuals, including those enrolled in Partnership HealthPlan of California. If you are pregnant and have Medi-Cal, you can likely access doula support at no cost.

Steps to Apply for Doula Services

  1. Verify Your Eligibility

    • Ensure you are enrolled in Medi-Cal (fee-for-service) or a Managed Care Plan (MCP) such as Partnership Health Plan of California. If you have fee-for-service (aka straight medi cal) you will only have a BIC (Benefits Identification Card). If you have a MCP you will have an additional card from your MCP. The Village Doula Collective currently only accepts straight Medi Cal (fee-for-service) or PHP but we are working on contracting with additional MCP providers and private insurance providers.

    • Contact your local county office or check your Medi-Cal benefits online.

  2. Find an Approved Doula

    • Search for a Medi-Cal-approved doula in Butte or Humboldt County.

    • The Village Doula Collective offers services covered by Medi-Cal.

  3. Request a Referral

    • Ask your primary care provider (PCP), OB-GYN, or midwife for a referral.

    • Some doulas can assist in obtaining authorization for their services.

  4. Confirm Authorization & Coverage

    • Once approved, you will receive confirmation of the number of covered visits.

    • Services typically include prenatal visits, birth support, and postpartum care.

  5. Schedule Your Doula Visits

    • Work with your doula to set up a care plan tailored to your needs.

    • Attend regular prenatal check-ins, labor support, and postpartum visits.

What to Expect from Doula Services Through Medi-Cal

Tips for Maximizing Your Medi-Cal Doula Coverage
